Caught at Department store in New Jersey
I was recently caught shoplifting. To cut to the chase of the story, the LP took me in the back room where they took down my information, retrieved what i stole and made me sign a couple papers. They never called the police. As I understand it, if they don't call the police while you are there, then you are most likely not being prosecuted. Is that right? The value of the merch was around 50. Please help!

Yes you are correct it is not likely they will pursue this any further however they could. Again I would not look over your shoulder for cops it is very unlikely any charges will be filed but you will most likely get a Civil Deman letter in mail

Could employers ever find out about what happened if you are not criminally prosecuted ... but rather only punished via a civil demand letter?

This just happened to me as well...I'm worried sick about it. If you pay the fine can they still press charges later?

Yes, places use retail theft databases such as USMA and Choicepoint. I know that most companies run you through that database and if you come up as a "hit" you are declined employment. These records stay on file at that specific company indefinately, but in the open theft database, seven or so years.

Do employers routinely run these checks on present employees? or only on new hires?
