Can I Get Emancipated or Something Similar
I'm from North Carolina. I will be sixteen in the fall of this year (2013). I graduated high school with a 3.9 GPA when I was fourteen and am currently enrolled in college holding a 4.0 GPA and am carrying classes full time. I was homeschooled my whole life, and taught myself everything I know. I run my family's small farm and do most of the general household work. I carry alot of responsibility, and people entrust me with alot more than most young adults my age. I want to step a little further into having more adult responsibility rather than what most would view as chores. My problem is that my parents have such strict rules that they won't let me do anything besides school. I'm stuck in this huge wheel that rolls something like this:

I can't get my lisence untill I can pay for my own insurance.
I can't pay for insurance untill I get a job.
I can't get transported to a job by my parents since they won't allow me to work due to their religious beliefs.
I can't get myself to and from work to hold a job without a lisence if my parent's do not consent to me working and transport me, which brings me back to not being able to get my lisence untill I can pay for my own insurance.

Everyone who knows me says that I am more mature than my years. I'm stuck feeling like I can't do anything with my life. I don't necessarily want to ditch my parents through emancipation, but I need to be able to make some decisions whether my parents truly approve or not. Would it not seem wiser to attempt to get yourself financially set up before turning eighteen and having to do everything overnight? To have your parents guide you and be there to help you when you are trying to step foot into the world for the first time in your life? I'm at a place in life where there is nothing left for me outside of college classes, which I am already taking. It's a living wonder my parents are able to afford these classes now, but I know they will not be able to keep doing so for much longer. I'm not even sure we can scrap up the money for my classes this fall even though I'm attending a cheaper community college and am already using financial aid. When they can't afford for me to finish college, what am I supposed to do with my life? I can't assist in paying for my classes without a job. I'm stuck....and I will continue to be for atleast two years if something doesn't give.

I know I am incapable of emancipation (from what I have researched on my own) as I do not have a job to financially support myself or have a home of my own. I don't want to ditch my parents either, I love them and have no issues whatsoever until it comes to making these kind of decisions for myself. Is there any way to get the legal ability to make decisions outside of my parent's authority without going through emancipation? If not, is there any way to get emancipated (under the assumption I get a job after I can make the decision for myself as I have three places to choose between which have garunteed me employment if I so desire when I am able), but still live at home? I understand if there is nothing of the sorts that can assist me in accomplishing what I want, and am okay with that. I would just like to know that I'm not looking at the next two years of my life knowing I could possibly accomplish nothing in that time.

    Absolutely not.

Emancipation does not mean "I don't have to obey my parents, but they still have to support me." It means "I'm an orphan, I'm supporting myself 100%, without help from anyone else, and I need the legal ability to enter into contracts so I can keep my lights on and not lose my home."

Oh, drama. You have NO idea how much being an adult with responsibilities SUCKS, do you?

My eldest used to fuss when he was your age. Couldn't wait to get a job and get out into the Real World. We told him if he could find full time work and take care of himself 100%, we'd consent to him moving out. Well, he has in the in between apologized for being a self-centered little snot-nozzle, and is damned grateful that, at the age of 21, he still has the support of his family and the assurances that we have his back and he has a home here as long as he needs. He's now pleased as pie to contribute financially to the household while he gnaws his way up the food chain in his profession to secure full-time hours and a living wage.

Patience, kid. Stay in school, and be grateful that your parents are insisting that you do so. Life on the Outside is made of ass and tears, and having a good education will help ease that pain.

All reasons why you do not qualify for emancipation.

Do you want to know what it is like to be an adult?

To get an apartment, you must have a steady job and in a lot of cases earn 3 times what your rent is. Look at the prices in your area to get an idea of how much money you would need to make.

Next...you need transportation to work. I just filled my gas tank for $40.00 and another $130 a month for insurance.

You need to afford food. Estimate $50 per week. You need to afford staples - laundry detergent, dish soap, toilet paper, toothpaste, deodorant...you get the idea.

You need a budget for clothing since some employers will require a certain dress code.

Furniture, dishes, cookware, utensils, vacuum, plunger, toilet bowl brush, towels...... When you turn 18 and graduated and move out, your parents do not have to let you take the bed, dresser, clothes, they purchased for you.

Getting the idea yet? Atleast that will give you a head start planning a budget for when you do move....

Focus on graduating with your four year degree. The rest of life will come crashing down after that. If you are managing the farm, might I suggest you become a CPA or doctor.

If you can feed yourself for only $50 a week, food must be a lot cheaper in Michigan than it is in Massachusetts. :p

I could feed myself for 50.00 a week too, and could eat well on that amount. Of course, that means actually cooking...no convenience foods, but it can easily be done...remember, that would not include paper goods or sundries, just food.

    Think about it?

I'm not sure I could, even actually cooking. I prefer cooking to convenience foods. But it's not impossible that the costs really are higher here than in the Midwest.

    $75, I probably could do.

Given that we're largely farm country, it's not only not impossible, it's incredibly likely. Do you have ALDI in MA? That is seriously one of the best ways to eat very well, for shockingly little money.

We do have them, but the nearest one to me is at least an hour away, maybe longer because of our wretched infrastructure/

Well, $200 a month is what I get for Food Stamps. That's just for me. If you do the math...it is $6.66 per day.

If Cutie here is in need of food stamps to survive, then emancipation is off the table. For a court to emancipate a minor, she needs to show that SHE is capable of supporting herself - not that she needs the taxpayers to do it.

Honestly, no one was trying to be snarky to you. Everyone seems to understand the load you carry. The two responses you seemed to find offensive, were heartfelt. Missy, was trying to explain that even though you work hard, you live in a controlled environment. Pandy, was trying to explain the reality of how real life is, when you don't succeed and flourish. Continue showing the resolution you have until now, get through college and then worry about kicking the worlds butt.

Thank you all for what you have told me. I completely understand the points you all have made. I know for certain that emancipation is, by far, out of the equation. I assumed as much, but was not certain. I guess there is no other alternatives either.

However, I do not appreciate the snyde remarks such as kid, drama, and not knowing what it's like to be an adult. Those are quite insults to me, as no body up here knows me as an individual. If it was not noted in my original post, I carry quite the responsibility at home. How many sixteen year old girls will you find that could care less about what color their hair is getting dyed and when they get their manicure/pedicure done, but, rather, are outside all day working their butt off around a farm? Who care for the child of their sorry excuse of a brother in the midst of it? None of you truly know everything about me and who I am, so, please, be careful before you assume that every child is alike.

Also, I do own my furniture. I purchased a bedroom suit of my own at thirteen years old from money I had saved from various "jobs" such as occassional babysitting/housecleaning/etc. for extended family. I am very diligent with my earnings and have never blown it on extravagant things. It takes about $150 plus approximately 8 to 10 hours a day working amongs the various farm life and in the garden and working with any product to feed/clothe a family of four. Yes, clothe. I sew or knit everything my family wears. The yarn I use to knit with came off of the sheep in my backyard, which I sheared, then cleaned, combed, spun, etc. the wool. If you choose not to believe what all I have to say, then that is your folly. I have been raised rather well by my parents, if I do have the room to say so.

I have never been the type to embrace childhood. Being a kid is a false reality of life. That is why you have so many people running around in this world who act like children even though they are in their twenty's or even thirty's. Most people think that there is little responsibility growing up except taking the trash out or leveling up in the next hottest video game that comes out. They are very wrong. And almost everyone else won't have a clue how to live when they can't just run up to the grocery store and buy a can of beans and some frozen chicken. I know what life really is, and nobody can tell me otherwise.

And to clear the air, me not having something to do with my life is not drama. I truly work to live, and I am approaching the time in my life where working doesn't come without a paycheck. My parents LOVE that I am not a child and they can depend on me to work and care for the house/household. They believe a woman should not be the one who works to earn money, but rather the woman in Proverbs 21. I respect my parents, I truly do. But they were raised in an era where everything in life did NOT revolve around money, and a whole heck of alot of things in today's socitey does. It makes me mad, honestly. Money has become this world's god. In order to be able to do anything anymore, it requires money. That is what I can't get through my parents' heads.

If I have to keep doing what I am now, and wait until I am 18, then so be it. I'm willing to accept that fact. Thank you all for your responses, they deffinitely answered my question. :)

Oh, and college for me is just a pain in the rear and a whole lot of money being handed out to get a single piece of paper so that people can then say I know something. A piece of paper does not mean a thing outside of how men choose to view you. I already know 90% of what I am "learning" in college. I already KNOW what I'm being "taught." I'm just getting that stupid piece of paper so that, for once, maybe people will actually think I know what the heck I'm talking about. College is a money making gimick that so many people fall into. Society is just getting dumber as it goes, and I thought people would be smarter than what I see out there, but it's just like extended HS. I did harder work in my HS that I'm doing at the campus now. So no, I'm not going to stayin school. I'm getting this degree so I have proof that I might actually know something, and I'm done.

The key to success is not in getting a degree. The key to success is getting a marketable degree. This means researching the STEM field you are interested in, then determining the best choice for an accredited program that the industry will recognize. Obtaining those degrees should serve you well.

If you want people to think you know what you are talking about, no piece of paper is going to help. You need to start by learning about whatever it is you're talking about.

And you need to learn to spell.

    "Until", not "Untill".
    "license" not "lisense"

    Tough noogies.

Until you reach the age of majority, you are a child.

Until you actually live on your own and support yourself 100%, without any help from anyone, you have absolutely no clue what adult life entails.

    Get over yourself.
