Shoplifting at Macy's in Ohio
Last night I was "caught shoplifting" by two loss prevention workers at Macy's. Ultimately, they did not have enough evidence to do anything (they alleged that I put a sweater in my bag in the dressing room), but apparently they did not have enough video survillence evidence to do anything, so they let me go. They found the sweater in my bag, but I said it had purchased it from a different Macy's and was trying on different sizes. Today I called the Macy's because I was curious as to why this still took down my information after telling me that they had nothing to go on. I spoke to the manager of loss prevention who said she still had to review the case. She later called me back and said that it was handled incorrectly by her workers and that she had different video survillance that showed me picking up 2 sweaters, not 1 (as the guys last night had seen). She said if I simply showed up to the store with the sweater she would take it (no questions asked) and forget this ever happened. She said she is most concerned with recovering items so that she doesn't get in trouble with inventory count. I returned the sweater today (she met me in the parking lot) and left. Is there anything I need to worry about? I didn't sign anything and the cops were never called, but they have my address and phone number at Macy's. I don't know if I should trust what she said... Is there any way to check to see if/when they will do anything or should I just assume what she said is true? The value of the sweater was 40 dollars and it was in Ohio if that matters. I told her I wasn't admitting my guilt by returning the sweater, but that I just wanted this to go away. Please advise....
Re: Shoplifting at Macy's - Ohio
No if you had anything to worry about it would have happened when yu returned your fine. they got what they wanted merch. I would stay away from store for a bit though
Re: Shoplifting at Macy's - Ohio
is there still anything i can do to check to make sure i'm in the clear? i don't want to call back macy's and pester them, but i also don't want any surprises in a few months. what is the worst i could anticipate happening?
Re: Shoplifting at Macy's - Ohio
If they still have evidence they "could" file charges but its VERY unlikely. If they did pursue it then they would have to explain why they let you go and said they made mistake! No you have nohting to fear. They got their merch back and thats what was important. They could pursue it but I would not lose any sleep over it. Best thing I can tell you is to count you rlucky stars and NEVER do this again!!
Re: Shoplifting at Macy's in Ohio
A lot of posts talk about shoplifters being made to sign something when they are in the "back room." Since I never had to sign anything does that mean they can't do anything (in way of a civil fine)? Also, since the cops were not called the night of the incident, does that mean they can't do anything criminally?
Re: Shoplifting at Macy's in Ohio
RELAX!!!!! geez whatever happens happens! If and I mean IF they press charges its first offense fines and penalties are minor. The paper your talking about might be Civil Demand that willcome in form of a letter asking for a sum of money (around $200.00) that is completely outside of courts. Go back to my first word and relax ok!!!!! I would be VERY surprised if they did anything at all!! they got their merchandise they lost nothing!! Just dont do it again.

I'm sorry I keep asking questions, but this is all I can think about. I appreciate your help. Was it stupid of me to return the sweater?

No and may be factor that keeps you from being prosecuted. Best thing you could have done was return sweater

Yes. You very stupid of you. That is like admitting guilt. Why would someone turn over a sweater that they had paid for just like that? If I paid $40 or whatever for a sweater, I sure as hell wouldn't just hand it over to the store for any reason. I would make them charge me and then they have the burden of proof in the case.
Be honest, did you or did you not steal the sweater?
Re: Shoplifting at Macy's in Ohio
Guilt was admited to. First line in orignal post reads "Last night I was "caught shoplifting"
