First Time Offender, Retail Fraud 3rd Degree
    Hello,
I was recently charged with retail fraud for allegedly trying to steal $56 dollars worth of goods from a local department store in Michigan. I was taken in by loss prevention, and my information was taken down, a report was written up by them, and an officer came and took to the the police station where I was booked and held on $100 bond. I'm currently waiting on my arraignment and I'm wondering what I do now.
I'm a 19 year old male and a first time offender with no prior criminal record. I'm looking to get this over with quickly and cleanly. I feel a diversion program would be ideal, if at all possible to obtain, as I don't want even this misdemeanor on my record. I will be able to pay the fines, and civil damages provided they are under 1,000 dollars as I don't have much money floating around. I'm not familiar with the criminal court process. I would appreciate any incite into this process, and in your opinion what I might be facing in terms of punishment? Should I spend the money I have on a private lawyer, or go with a Public Defender, considering even my best case plea deal still probably has me facing several hundreds in fines?

The time to think about that was before you "allegedly" stole, not after.

Not much I can do about the past. Just trying to make the best out of my mistake.
