Minor Paid Under the Table
My question involves employment and labor law for the state of: NH
I just started working a job at a local business...My boss paid me in cash and I didn't have to fill out any paperwork... I'm 16 years old by the way, and it is my first job. What is going on here? What can you tell me about this? Consequences on my part?
Thank you!

What your boss did was totally and completely illegal. I suggest that you look for another job.
Re: Minor Paid Under Table
Maybe, maybe not. What were your overall earnings for the year?
Re: Minor Paid Under Table
... i haven't been working there for that long
Re: Minor Paid Under Table
Okay, but that doesn't help me. What are you earning per hour and how many hours a week do you work, on average?
Re: Minor Paid Under Table
$7.50 per hour. Well.. since it is the school year, I'm only working between 8 and 20 hours per week. But when school is over, I'll be working a lot more often
Re: Minor Paid Under Table
You're going to earn more than the minimum, so you will have to file a tax return. If your employer has not withheld the appropriate taxes, you will need to make the payments at that time. Whether you quit the job or stay with it is your decision, but you are not excused from paying tax because your employer is not making the required deductions.

cbg, all income has to be reported for income tax purposes whether someone is making less than minimum wage or not in this scenario. In addition, it is not legal for an employer to pay someone until the table or as an independent contractor unless they are truly an independent contractor.
Re: Minor Paid Under Table
what are the consequences for me?
Re: Minor Paid Under Table
I wasn't talking about minimum wage; I was talking about the minimum amount to be subject to federal tax. I will grant you that even if he were earning less than the minimum to pay tax, that would still have to be reported, and I am not claiming that the employer is doing things correctly. Since no paperwork was completed, the employer should be withholding at the top rate, not no rate. But until we asked, there was no guarantee that a 16 year old minor in an after school job was going to have any federal tax liability.
OP, I would not expect you to know this, but you can pull a blank W-4 off the web, complete it and give it to your employer.
ETA: The consequences to you are that you will have to pay all the tax due when you file your taxes. If you are asking if you are in any legal trouble, the answer is no, not unless you fail to report the income in question.
