Running Away from Probation
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Colorado. When I was 16 I was charged with a felony for allegedly assaulting someone who actually assaulted me. Problem is I went home and he went to the police. My probation officer just kept at me and when I was 18 I was starving and homeless. I called and told her I had to move back home to another state where my mom could help. I gave her all the contact information and told her I needed help. She never called my mom's house. I called several times with no response. Here I am 14 years later, married and 4 kids and a friend I told about my life in Colorado had a fight with me and turned me in to authorities here. Problem is, my family is REALLY struggling. I wasn't married to my wife at the time and I had qualified for food stamps to help my children because I wasn't making enough to feed them. Suddenly I was told I couldn't continue to get help for my children because of what happened years ago in Colorado. I have a mess that I don't know where to begin to clean up. I was all alone when I got the charges and didn't know how to fight things. I really didn't do it and now my children are suffering because I didn't know any better. I was told to pay $5,000. restitution (even though nobody paid my medical bills for his beating the daylights out of me). I've been told that I am considered an escaped felon and that's why my children can't get food stamps. I am so frustrated and don't know what to do to help my family. I recently married their mom but I feel so worthless because I can't get a job here now because it's showing up on background checks and I can't get help from the government to feed my family. Where do I begin to clean up this mess? I don't have any money for an attorney and my mom isn't financially equipped to hire one for me either. Is there a way to contact the court and get going the right way? What do I do to resolve the warrant situation? The state I am in said I can't qualify for food stamps as long as there is a warrant for me. Where do I begin? I'm broke, get children who are starving and I can't get a job because of this mess either. I need help.
Re: How Do I Clean This Up
How come in your other post you state you were an insurance agent for 20 years and are now working in another industry but in this post you state you can't get a job because of your past criminal history?
Re: Running Away from Probation
Retain a lawyer in the jurisdiction in which you are charged and try to work out a deal for the sentence you will receive after you surrender.
Re: How Do I Clean This Up
Sorry, didn't mean to confuse you. The criminal issue is about my son and not me. I am trying to help him figure this out. He is so discouraged and I am so worried about him, his new wife and my grandchildren. It's so disappointing because he has become such a wonderful father and it is breaking his heart that he can't provide for them. He has suffered with ADHD all his life and I guess I just worry about a possible "breaking point". I have placed a call to the court to discuss an arrangement for restitution payments and possibly work on their dropping the "fugitive" status so he can qualify for benefits (especially his medication) and open doors for employment.
I was actually in insurance for a long time in various states and recently "shelved" my license because I took work in another industry. I just felt I needed a starting place for talking to someone to figure out where to begin with his issue. The posts were about him and me separately. Sorry to confuse you. :-)
