Can You Still be Charged if the Cashiers Let You Go After Catching You Stealing
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Wisconsin

I went to a gas station, I pocketed a few candy bars. When I went to check out, I put all my stuff up there and they scanned it. Then they asked "Is there anything else?" I said "Nope that's it." "There's nothing else?" "No." "Are you sure?" Yes." then a cashier next to her said "So there's no candy or anything?" I said "No, I don't need any candy." They they just kind of looked at me, and said "Ok." and I grabbed my bag of stuff and walked out. I think I saw them looking at my licence plates (which happen to be out of state plates because I'm driving a rental). I did pay with my Credit Card though (this was before they started questioning me, so I didn't get the chance to realize in time and use cash). They do have cameras too.
I'm guessing a customer may have saw me and tipped them off, or one of the cashiers actually saw me.
What might happen to me now? I have no idea what will happen. Will they pursue anything over a few candy bars? Will I get a letter in the mail summoning me to court? Should I just never go there again and I'll be fine? I'm never stealing again, and don't even know why I did it... but I have a great salary job, and would hate for this to be on my record, so I would like to know what might happen so I can start to prepare. Thank you for reading. And yes, I know I am a dumbass... a recovering dumbass now.

If you were reported for stealing, you can be charged with stealing. When you choose to steal, you create a context in which you may have to worry about getting caught and prosecuted. We can't take that away - the future is uncertain so you get to wait and see what happens. If you weren't detained, odds are you got away with it, but individual experiences can vary. Best to stick with that recovery plan.
