    Going to Court for Petty Theft
    My question involves criminal law for the state of: california
    i was arrested 2 weeks ago for petty theft in macy's store (shoplifting 380$) i went to the jail for 2 days then to the court where the judge release me and told to ga back in order to grab a french interpreter to better undersatand the judge and my public deffender.i'm an international student with an expired F1 visa.what is going to happen in the court and can i get deported ?

    Well first offense of Petty Theft is good for up to six months in jail and up to $1000 fine (plus costs).
    A diversion program would normally be available, but for an illegal visitor, it may not be offered.
    A conviction of a misdemeanor wouldn't necessarily trigger deportation, but they certainly could hold you based on the overstay. How long have you been out of status?

    I've never heard of any county offering that as a prerequisite, although as the programs can vary by county I can't speak for the nation.
