Name Change to the Alias I Have Been Using My Entire Life
My question involves name change laws in the State of: FL
First of all I was born in Arkansas and currently reside in Florida. When I was born my mother and father were not married so my birth certificate has my mother's maiden name as my last name. When they got my social security number assigned, they gave my father's surname. I have lived by my father's surname since then (currently 33). This hasn't been a problem until I needed to get a Florida driver's license. (I had always used alternate paperwork to prove identity before). A birth certificate is now necessary. What would be the best way to resolve this. I don't really care which name I wind up with. I filled out all the paperwork for a name change in Florida. I have not filed anything yet. The fees are fairly high, and I don't want to throw money away I don't have. I'm worried I will get to the judge and he'll throw everything out because I should have done it differently.

If you have filled out all the paperwork correctly and followed all other instructions, you should be fine. You'll be in front of the judge for about 5 minutes, you'll be asked why you want the name change, then you're done.
