    Caught Shoplfiting but Not Charged
My question involves criminal law for the state of: shoplifting
This is my first offense. I went to the mall in jersey city and I bought things from some stores but when I got to Macy's I wanted to get this Nike sweatshirt which I did not have enough money to buy. I thought about it and wrongfully decided to try to take it. In the fitting room there was no security tags just the brand and price tag. I most have looked suspicious since it was my first time taking anything ever. But when I walked out a Macy's security had her walkie talkie loud and it said that a female has been seen taking something and that if she leaves the store with it she will be charged with shoplifting. I was hopping it wasn't me but she seemed to be following me. So I decided to tell her I had it. She said okay and a worker got the sweatshirt and checked my bag incase I had anything else. I didn't. She asked for an ID and my age. I'm 18. I have her my school ID and she wrote my name down. Said my picture will be taken from the cameras from the store and that if I enter Macy's again I would be charged with trespassing. This is a store my mom goes to often. Am I banned for good or is it certain amount of years and they never took down address or phone number just name and age. I'm aware that I am very lucky to have not been charged or had a fine. I'm worried about my mom asking me to accompany her and then me not being blue to enter. She doesn't know this happened and I can't bring myself to tell her. I will never do this again it was so dumb of me to think I would get away with this or that it was even a good idea in the first place.
    My questions are:
    1) what do they do with my name and with the picture they will retrieve from the security cameras? Do they have a list of shoplifters online or they print it out and hang it ?
    2) since they didn't get any further information but my name and age will they look me up and send me something in the mail?
    3) how long will I not be allowed back in there? Am I banned from Macy's indefinantly? If I enter the store after some time will they recognize me and really charge me with trespassing?

If you weren't charged criminally you dodged a great bullet of not getting a criminal record. If you go into that store again you will be risking blowing that. It is beyond me why people who get a second chance (when many don't even get a first chance), insist on flaunting the generosity of those who give that chance.

    STAY OUT OF MACY'S.
    STOP STEALING THINGS.

You can write Macy's after some time elapsed and see if they will rescind the trespass order. For now, it is forever. Macy's needs paying customers, not weaselly thieves.

And don't think you've avoided the civil liability. Expect a letter soon from Macy's "lawyers" demanding compensation for the expense they have to exert to protect themselves from your moral turpitude.

And to expand on that...the ban is ALL Macy's stores, nationwide.

Give it atleast 6 months, then write the Corporate office, attn loss prevention, and ask to have the ban lifted. Do not go into a store until you have a letter granting you permission to enter again.
