How to Interpret an Order Awarding Custody
Greeting all,
I am in Illinois. I filed divorce by publication, and the Judgement of dissolution of marriage said that "Custody of the child is awarded to Petitioner."
I am a bit confused. Does the mean I have the sole custody of the child? Or is it still joint?
This is an urgent issue, I really appreciate your help!
Regards,
Gary

It appears you have sole custody. Double check with the court.

To give a bit context, The child's mother has left the country since 2006, I got divorce by publication in 2008. She has never shown up or be any part of the child's life. I am applying for the US passport for the child. The National Passport Center asked me to send "A court order granting sole legal custody to the applying parent". I wonder if the Judgement of Dissolution of Marriage with above statement "Custody of the child is awarded to Petitioner." will be accepted. I have booked flight and hotel for me and my child for April, so the time frame is really tight.
Thank you very much for your reply!
