Questions About Emancipation in Texas
I myself do not live in Texas; rather, I'm trying to gather information to help someone I know that does.
From what I know right now, she is 17. I'm not sure if she has a job or not.
I am presenting this information through what I was told via instant message:
Sometime recently, her brother-in-law did a few things towards her that she didn't like; namely, poking her twice in a lower area and "grabbed the air" over her chest. She told her sister and her sister's husband what happened, and her sister's husband didn't like it.
Her other sister called and asked her to apologize, else they wouldn't take her somewhere, which obviously the brother-in-law was going there as well.
When it was brought up, the brother-in-law claimed that he poked her hip instead of where he actually did, and was only using his hands to "compare forms" between her sisters.
Now one of her sisters is getting upset about it, and her mother is putting the blame of everything on her, calling her selfish, making her break down emotionally, and as a result, she nearly had the urge to cut herself...
She told me the only reason she can't leave is because she has to finish her school semester, but I'm pretty certain she could get a transfer if she was able to move out.
I myself viewed what happened as very borderline sexual harassment, and getting blamed for the "drama" she caused when she reported it to her sister.
Now, for my questions to the above situation:
1. Would it be remotely possible for her to get emancipated?
2. If emancipation were possible, and it passed, would she be able to move out of state?
3. If moving out of state isn't possible, would she be able to move somewhere, such as an apartment, until she is 18, then move out of state?
I'm trying my best to help her out. I'd even get myself a job to pay her way here and help my mom with bills to support her.
I just hate seeing my friends in a situation like this and feel completely powerless...
Information such as job status, date for turning 18, and anything else, I can gather tomorrow.
Re: Emancipation in Texas - questions!
She should have a full time job supporting herself 100% before she can be emancipated.
Re: Emancipation in Texas - questions!
The statute indicates that she should be capable of supporting herself. There is no requirement that it be through a full-time job.

True, Aaron. But a 17 year old with a part time job isn't likely to be able to be self supporting. You are correct, though.
