Whose Last Name Should Baby Take With a Teenage Pregnancy
My question involves paternity law for the State of: Michigan
My 16 year old daughter is due to have a child in 3 months. The questions been discussed as to who's last name the baby should take. Are there any laws and or consequences whether the baby takes my daughters last name or the 16 yr old fathers?
A little in sight....my daughter comes from a working class family....the baby's father does not.....his mother works a little bit but his father does not...he's milking the disability system. they continuously have their utilities shut off.

(We don't need the insight - your daughter picked this guy to be Dad, so he's good enough for her if nothing else)

There are no laws stating an unwed mother must give the child a particular last name.

She could, in fact, name the child Ethelred Humperdinck Whippleprocedure if she wants to :)

I think it should take the name Jefferson. It is a name that stands out well in US history.

So? What does that have to do with what one names a child?

She can name the kid whatever she wants. But really, that's a silly thing to be worrying about with a teen pregnancy. Focus your efforts on establishment of paternity, child support, and custody orders to ensure the baby is properly taken care of by both parents.
