How to Respond to a Cease and Desist Email
I run a small stationary website in the USA. I recently received an email from a law firm in the UK claiming that one the pens I sell features copyrighted artwork. This is completely unbeknownst to me, but to err on the side of caution, I have taken the pens down from my website, as requested by the C & D. However they also are requesting that I give them the amount of pens sold and for how much, tell them where I bought the pens & the thing that worries me the most "To pay reasonable legal costs and compensation arising in respect of our infringement of our artworks set out in Schedule 1 which will be assessed upon receipt of the above information". They also want me to send them back a signed document agreeing to all this in (now less than) seven days. The funny part is I have sold only three of these pens, for a grand total of about 8 bucks. I have not written them back, as I'm unsure how to proceed. I have thought of just responding "I have ceased and desisted" and nothing more to their email, as I have seen that recommended in similar cases I have read about online.

They're in the U.K. and you're in the U.S.? And this correspondence is coming from the U.K., not a U.S.-based lawyer? If so, having taken the pens off of the site, my personal inclination would be to disregard the remaining demands and hold my tongue.
