I Feel Threatened by a Debt Collector
My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Illinois/Indiana
I had a business that closed in October 2012. In January I moved into a new apartment. Within 3 days of moving in, I received a letter from a debt collector representing Gordon Food Service for a past due invoice. It was sent to my new address. How did they know my new address? I had not changed my drivers license, my firearm ID, or even forwarded my mail yet. This made me extremely paranoid.
I received a letter two days ago from the same debt collector. One sentence in that letter really bothered me.
"You are most fortunate to have qualified for the ****** ***** Apartments; however, you still need to take responsibility for other obligations that you personally guaranteed." (I omitted the apartment name for privacy)
Ok, Now how do they know the name of the apartments? They just opened two months ago. They are not listed in any directories yet and are not even on a map. The credit check that the apartments ran was run under the leasing company name which is entirely different.
I am completely baffled by the whole thing and worried.
Have they talked to my apartment manager? Can they get me evicted? I don't want to go as far as saying someone is watching and following me, but that's how I feel.
Re: I Feel Threatened by a Debt Collector
Are the utilities there in your name? If so, that's probably how they found you. It's not that difficult for a trained person to track people down, even when they believe there are no tracks.
Re: I Feel Threatened by a Debt Collector
I thought of that too, but none of the utilities are in my name. Not even cable/internet.
Re: I Feel Threatened by a Debt Collector
It was probably from the credit check. Until you pay them, expect to be pursued. Why should you have benefited at their expense.

Regardless, as I said, a well trained skip tracer will find you. This appears to be the case here. I seriously doubt any DC is going to authorize physical surveillance expenditures.

Watch where you park and drive your car. They may have license plate scanners in their delivery trucks.

Re: I Feel Threatened by a Debt Collector
Ok. Can the debt collector do anything to get me evicted or even discuss my debt with anyone else?
Re: I Feel Threatened by a Debt Collector
They cannot get you evicted and by law, they cannot discuss your debt with anyone else. They can call others to find out where you are, but that's it.
