Depositing an Expired Check
My question involves court procedures for the state of: New York
Sorry if I posted in the wrong forum, couldn't figure out a good place for it.
So I received a check some time ago, which I forgot to deposit. The check was legitimately issued to cover money I'm actually owed, but were I to deposit the check now it would bounce as stale dated.
Is there any way to process an electronic debit using the check the way some stores say they do? And is it legal, since the check is expired?
It's so small that getting it reissued is hardly worth the bother or the postage.
Re: Depositing an Expired Check
The manner in which you deposit the check won't change whether or not it's accepted, or whether or not the bank upon which it's drawn honors the check. If you want to see if you can still get the money, deposit the check and see what happens - but I don't suggest doing anything with any money credited to your account until you're certain it's not going to be taken back.
Re: Depositing an Expired Check
You might try calling the bank where the check was issued and see if you can verify that the account has funds enough to cover the check. If yes, take it to that bank and have it cashed. If they won't tell you on the phone, just take it to that bank and present it. If no, then you'll have to get it reissued or just kiss the money goodbye.
