Switching Between My Grandparents to My Dads
My question involves a child custody case from the State of: Texas
Hi. I'm 17 and I'm currently living with my grandparents and don't like the state being of my living conditions. Not that I'm not getting proper health care or getting neglected I just wanted to to know what it would take to live with my dad. The reasons why I want to move and live with my dad is because my parents have gotten divorced when I was about 3 or 4 and I was distant from my dad for a very long time. When I was 13 my dad appeared back in my life and has been the greatest since then. My grandparents keep my from my friends and I'm rarely allowed to get out of the house. What would it take to move out of my grandparents (that my mom gave legal custody too) and into my dads? Would I have to be emancipated or what? My dad is all for my living with him in his house, and he also can afford my living with him. Don't know if this would matter in the attorney state that my grandparents have a lot more money than my dad and if I had to go to court if this would matter who had a better attorney. I really need information from whoever really knows this kinda of situation. I would really love to be with my dad and know how my life would be with my dad considering when I did live with him when I was little and I don't quite remember I would like to see where it would go. Me and my dad have a great relationship and I get along with him better than my grandparents. Could really use any information.
Thank you, and really any information would be greatly appreciated.
Re: Switching Between My Grandparents to My Dads
No, you will not be emancipated to go live with your dad. This isn't your decision. If your dad wants you to live with him, he will have to file for custody himself.
Re: Switching Between My Grandparents to My Dads
So even so if I'm 17 I can't choose who I want to live with? Cause that's what I was told.
Re: Switching Between My Grandparents to My Dads
No, you can't.
During an initial custody determination, at 17 you would more or less be able to "choose".
But after that? Not so much.
Re: Switching Between My Grandparents to My Dads
When you are 18, you can live wherever you want.
Re: Switching Between My Grandparents to My Dads
When is your 18th birthday?
Even if dad did file tomorrow, it could take almost a year to finish the court process anyway. Especially if your grandparents have a good attorney - a good attorney knows how to delay things for a very long time if it is to their advantage to do so.
