What Can Be Done About Mentally and Emotionally Abusive Parents
My question involves civil rights in the State of: Pennsylvania

I'm 21-years-old, and my girlfriend is 19. I wasn't entirely sure where this should go so civil rights seems like my best option. We were caught partying in early January, and since then her parents have been doing a wide assortment of morally questionable and outright disgusting things trying to intimidate her and make her play their game the way they want her to. First, they put up a moving billboard in front of one of their businesses with her first name on it to publicly humiliate her; I believe they don't even have a license to put up this billboard in the first place. She is only living with them because she has no options, and both of her parents constantly berate and fight with her when she goes out of her way to avoid them. She has been staying elsewhere when possible. They bought her a car for graduation, a car that she pays insurance and gas on, and they've taken it from her repeatedly, the most recent time being because she left it somewhere else in a snowstorm that she wouldn't have made it home in. Her father called the police and if she doesn't get the car back to their house by tomorrow, a warrant will apparently be issued for her arrest. I know a lot of this isn't necessarily a legal issue but I'd like to know if there's anything that can be done to make it stop.

    She can move.

    Seriously - that's her option.

She is legally an adult. She is not required by law to live there any longer.

But if she does, it's their house, their rules.

So if she doesn't like the rules, her option is to move out. The law is not going to force her parents to let her do what she wants regardless.

So there is absolutely no way that they would be forced to stop harassing their daughter because she lives under their roof? I'm sorry but that is not justice. That's allowing the bullies and real criminals to continue abusing their daughter. Thanks for the responses but it looks like we're going to have to find our own way to fight this and deal with this. They should have no right to do a single thing they're doing.

Nothing you have posted constitutes harassment as defined by law. If she doesn't like the rules, she's free to move out.

Heck, if our 28 year old and/or 25 year old moved back in here? You better believe they'd follow our house rules. Otherwise, that door is always open for 'em to leave.

That's what parents who own homes and can afford cars do - they set rules and boundaries of what goes on in their homes and with their vehicles. Children are subject to parental rules, until they are adults. At adulthood, they have a choice: either stay and be subject to the rules of the home, even if absolutely medieval and completely unfair, or, go somewhere else. If she wants to operate under her OWN rules, tell her to get her OWN place and her OWN car - neither of which her parents are required to provide for her, as she's legally an adult.

I am getting so sick of hearing these so called adults complaining because their parents do not support them in the manner they wish. Tell her to go to a homeless shelter and get a job. If she looks half decent, she can become a stripper. Many successful woman have gone from a strip club to a board room.
