Wrote One of Wife's Checks to Pay Our Rent
My question involves criminal law for the state of: North Carolina
I realize this was very stupid. I had come up short on money because of Christmas and a car accident. We arrived back on the day the rent was due after driving two straight days in a rental. I had a concussion. I never slept, and the rent was due. My checkbook had been in the other car (wrecked) and we had to pay the rent that day or incur a 100 dollar late fee and the inconvenience of a money order.
Without thinking, and because my wife was so tired, I took one of her checks and wrote it to the landlord. I forgot all about it.
She was very angry when she found out, and even threatened police right then and there, which really surprised me because we get along, and I didn't realize I wasn't even allowed to do that. I thought our money was shared. Anyway, that was pretty ignorant.
Well, a week ago she cut contact with me and her entire family (she is a recovering addict) and now I feel very exposed and a bit frightened in case things get ugly and head towards a divorce.
What are the possible consequences I face? I have made restitution, and I pay the rent and all the bills every month anyway.
Re: Wrote One of Wife's Checks to Pay Our Rent
I can't comment for your marital issues, but since she was probably also subject to pay the rent, and you ARE married and living together, I doubt that any criminal charges are going to ensue even if she calls the police.

You don't think this is going to be an issue any more? From what you were saying, it didn't seem likely that it would.
