Re: Speeding Ticket in Oh
Ohio Troopers undergo a lot of training in the use of speed measuring devices and visual speed estimation. You are not going to win this citation, unless you plan on lying in court.
Re: Speeding Ticket in Oh
if it is a radar scrambler you would be wise to get rid of it and not mention it at all in court. posession of a jamming device is a felony with fines in the five figure range.

Re: Speeding Ticket in Oh
The allegedly legal ones which essentially try to induce noise on a passive reflection of the signal have been pretty much shown to be 100% ineffective anyway. At one point my boss (a Cal Tech physicist) and I while working on intelligence detectors (everything from radar, low light level cameras, FLIR, etc...) did a lot of testing on radar / lidar detectors and jammers (boss was also a corvette owner with a heavy foot). The whole principle of operation in the ones we examined were pretty laughable.
Re: Speeding Ticket in Oh
To Lehk: the scrambler does not emmit any signals, which I believe makes it legal with the FCC. But that leads to flyingron's point that it may not be effective. Based on both points, I will not make it a subject of any defense. But the device is a detector as well. And it still never went off. Any ideas there?
Re: Speeding Ticket in Oh
Detectors don't always work either. Given that laser is "instant on," it's possible he nailed you without your detector ever realizing it. If it detects a beam aimed at you, it is too late.
Re: Speeding Ticket in Oh
Laser @ how far? It should say on the ticket.
It's not instant on (although it's very fast), they have to focus the device first before it gives them a reading. A lot of times they end up moving the laser around, and it adds on speed, "sweep effect". Intentionally not addressed in LIDAR manuals for years now. That way, you can't bring it up in court.

read my link, the FCC considers them to be emitters because they emit.
they are not active in the sense that they do not use their own power to broadcast they use the energy of the incoming radar, however it's still illegal and the court agreed with the FCC that they were illegal.
Re: Speeding Ticket in Oh
Lehk: I looked at that link and could not determine when the ruling was? I bought this device about 4 years ago, so I was wondering when that ruling was made. Also, I see the company (Rocky Mountain) is still in business selling devices they claim "scramble" both laser and radar. I would find it hard to believe that would be so blatent as to sell these illigal products. Uless they are legal to sell/own, illigal to opperate?
And to lostintime: It says 1002 ft. Does that indicate anything? Especially his ability to clock me (is more than once required?), get situated, engage lights, and be pulling out before i arrived to him?
Re: Speeding Ticket in Oh
Just one thing: its still OK for the state to obtain a conviction just based on cop's speed observation too, right? Another thing to consider for a possible defense..
