Got Paid to Do Some Research Groups in 2012, Do I Have to File My Earnings with UI
My question involves unemployment benefits for the state of: CA

I have done some paid research groups last year (2012) and I had never given my Social Security # nor did they ever ask for it. I get a voicemail yesterday from the research group saying the accounting dept needs my SS# for the 1099 and confirmation of my mailing address. Am I obligated to give it to them and will UI find out or what happens? like i said i have never given my SS# out to them nor was I under the impression that I had to give it to them cause they never said I needed too or said in the future that I would have to. I asked my friend if he has ever gotten a call from the research groups for tax reasons and he said no. I wasn't an employee for them nor worked on contract or part time it was simply for some surveys that i got paid for. Is it illegal for a research group to ask for my SS# even when they never told me from the start that they would need it? that # is something that i don't hand out like its candy. Any advice on what I should do or not do? Thanks

Also too, I got let go from my job in late March 2012 and went on unemployment early to mid April 2012. Do i report my wages from Jan to March to UI or does that not count since obviously I wasnt on UI then but rather file my earnings to UI since collecting from April?

That doesn't mean the money isn't considered as earnings. You're required to report it to both UI and the IRS.

Give the company your SSN, and report your earnings to UI since starting UI.

Missy may be right, but you don't want to do that.

Just ignore the research people, and stop doing their surveys.

You're supposed to report the earnings as you earned them, not 9 months or more after the fact. Not sure how much you earned from these surveys, but you could see those earnings eradicated by false statement penalties, and possibly any remaining balance on your claim. It's one of those things where doing the right thing will be so painful that it's better to just tell the research people to pound sand, hope you don't get caught, and worry about it if you ever do get caught because the damage has already been done, and I doubt you have the money to fix things.

I don't believe its kosher to tell/recommend people to break the law here.

He already broke it. I'm not telling him to break it. The offense was committed in early 2012. You have no duty to incriminate yourself.

Providing a SS# to a person employing you is not considered self incrimination.

He can do whatever he wants, and I'm telling him why he shouldn't. Had he asked about these surveys before he took the first one, I'd have said, "don't do it." This is no longer an issue of breaking the law anymore.

Each week that he reported no earnings, he made a false statement. Those carry a minimum of 5 weeks of forgone benefits. Not where they defer your checks, but checks that you claimed and were deducted from your overall claim balance that you'll never see.

Each time he took a survey and completed it that should have created a separation issue and a new adjudication.

It would be a real stretch to call this research group his employer, and if they really considered him an employee, they'd have had him fill out an I-9 and state and federal withholding forms before paying him a nickle. If he doesn't want to provide them with his SS#, the "employer" can pursue some other avenue to get it, but if he doesn't want to help them, they can't make him.

So, your position is that having broken the law already, and now being offered with a way he could extricate himself from and legal issues and not having to wait for the shoe to drop when the UI catches up with him, he should ignore it and keep waiting for the shoe?
