About illegal detainment .. explains a few aspects of detainment for most contacts with the police .. on the streets when traveling.
Seems as if when a cop stops you for what is not a violation, then any search afterwards may be voided.

Basically, yes. Leaving aside the sometimes bizarre intricacies of 4th Amendment law as they don't appear to be implicated by this case, if the initial detention is without cause then what follows becomes "fruit of the poisonous tree".
