Do 18-year-olds need to be emancipated
I realize this isn't exactly a question about emancipation since (I think) 18 year olds are automatically given rights of emancipated minors (please correct me if I'm wrong there). I'm not sure where else would be a better place to post my question, so I'll put it here for now.

I'm currently 17 years old, turning 18 in December. Although I don't have serious issues with my parents or family, just the normal ones I'm sure, I would like to consider the possibility of moving out after I turn 18. Would I have to go through any emancipation proceedings? I have a part-time job and tutor on the side; that, combined with my current savings, would be enough to support my living arrangements if I rent either a room in a house or an apartment with others.

I assume I would have to fill out my own taxes as I'd no longer be a dependent of my father - how would I obtain them and/or change my legal residence? If I don't move out and become independent until some time in January, would I not have to file taxes for 2006?

Also, if anyone happens to know, what is Fairfax County PS policy on situations like this? I assume there's some way that I can establish control over things like field trip forms etc.

Thanks in advance for any help!

    Re: 18 year olds
The age of majority in Virginia is 18. After you turn 18 you can live wherever you choose.
