Becoming Emancipated in the State of Colorado
My question involves juvenile law in the State of: Colorado. Please help. I am a 16 year old. About 2 years ago after many years of foster care I moved to Colorado to have a legal guardianship under my aunt and uncle. We do not get along at all. They want me to become emancipated or else they will put me back in foster care. I refuse to go back there. I have called many different lawyers (they won't help), went to the county courts (they won't help) and I have no idea what else to do. I have a steady job and already pay for all my own expenses. The only reason I am still in their house is because they do not want to responsible incase I get hurt or in any trouble. Please help.
Re: Becoming Emancipated in the State of Colorado
Colorado does not have a statute for the emancipation of a minor, or a procedure by which you can go to court and come out emancipated. If you can show the state that you have been living on your own, supporting yourself 100%(and when you say you pay all your own expenses, does that mean market rate for rent and utilities too?) and managing all your own affairs, then if the state happens to feel like it they may deign to consider you emancipated. Otherwise, it's wait till you're 18.
