Did I Actually Get Caught Stealing
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois

im 17 years old,I went to tTer GAt to steal something and opened the item (Less than 20$)(Around 15$) i put it in my pocket and started to go. I figured to buy something so that it wont be obvious. So i bought something but as i was going up to pay for the item, i noticed someone dressed in regular clothes with a walki and my empty box that i stashed. So i decided to walk back and dump the items stolen. he quickly followed after me and i think he found the items. So i went up to pay for that item, freaking out (At this point had nothing on me stolen) i paid for the item i originally had but my problem was that i paid for some of it with my credit card and rest gift card. As im paying, i hear him on the walkie asking for the address of the store. After paying, I walk out, not looking nervous and act casual and just walk out. No chasing, no running, no cops. They did not come after me, nor did they arrest/make me sign papers. I am still nervous thought because of my credit card transaction, and my license plate. Any ideas what they can do?

First of all, I would not try stealing again. And I would avoid that store for a while.

It is possible they have your plate number. They may or may not ask the police for your name. They may or may not have taken a still photo of you from video surveillance and have it on their computers, with you being someone to watch out for.

Since you did not leave the store with the item, I don't think they can charge you.

If that experience did not scare you enough, let me tell you this: I stole a dress from a store....a $68 dress ended up costing me $2000 (Civil Demand, Court Fines, and the cost of hiring a lawyer). Ask yourself if it is worth it.
