Minor Caught Shoplifting in California, Age 17
My question involves criminal law for the state of: California.
I went into sephora today and stole some makeup. Money is tight in our house and my mom is a single mom. I'm not trying to make up excuses but just giving background. I went to put additional makeup in my bag, and just before I would have, a lady working there saw but I acted like I had a question to ask. She answered my question and then gave me a basket to put my makeup in. She then went and told a group of coworkers something, and one lady looked at me. While I continued looking around, the lady who answered my questions said into her mic "yeah I called security" and while I was walking around I was asked if I needed help at least 5 times. I knew I had to buy something, so I put the expensive stuff away and bought something cheap with cash but with my rewards card also, so they have my info (I don't know what I was thinking). I left the store sick to my stomach, but when I got home I realized I had makeup that I stole from before the incident. I may or may not be on camera for those. I feel really bad and my question is, can they prosecute me if I have left the store? Should I go back and tell them the truth and give back everything I stole? If they do end up prosecuting me, what are my consequences? I am applying to college. Will this show up on my record? Any help would be appreciated. Pleasee!
Re: Minor (17) Shoplifting in California
can they prosecute me if I have left the store? Yes.
If they do end up prosecuting me, what are my consequences? Depends on exactly what you end up being charged with.
I am applying to college. Will this show up on my record? Possibly. Again, it depends on exactly what you are charged with and what consequences you end up with.
Re: Minor (17) Shoplifting in California
Rewards card...um...that has your name and address on it...Heck yes, they can charge you.
Consequences....a misdemeanor charge that will haunt you. If you are charged - any college financial aid or scholarships are can be history. Court costs and fines. And a Civil Demand from the store....Lawyer or Public Defender...
In all....let's say you stole $10 of makeup....it can cost you $1000+.
