Retail Theft Misdemeanor Charges in Ilinois
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Illinois

Last week I was at a Store and I stole three jackets and a pair of shoes and was caught along with my friend who was also stealing.
We were both questioned, honest and cooperative and apologetic with the police officers and they said that was good and they were going to do something to help us out but I was so scared, I don't remember what they said. We were taken into the police station and fingerprinted and given a court date. but we didnt have to pay bail, just the processing fee. My slip I got from them says misdemeanor complaint on the top of it and it also says retail theft under $150. I have no previous record of doing anything wrong and never intend to steal again. My court date is next month and I am wondering what I should plead and if there is a way to have it expunged from my record.

You plead not guilty, and ask for an attorney.

    How old are you?

Expungment varies by locality. You would benefit from a consultation with a Criminal Defense attorney and ask if Diversion is available in your area.

3 jackets, pair of shoes...not gonna look good to the judge. This is not your first time shoplifting...it is your first time being caught.

With a friend? Really not gonna look good, be grateful it was not a higher charge like Felony Theft. They could have charged you and friend with planning the theft....

Expect court costs, fines, legal fees, costs for a diversion program if you get one (expect to pay for that), possibly probation, community service, anti-shoplifting program (each have fees).

You likely have also been banned from the store...this means worldwide....
