Caught Shoplifiting at Kohls
ok.. i just made the biggest mistake of my life. i was cought shoplifting at a kohls yesterday. i'm 16. i live in ny. the items totaled to $110. they took my pic, my address, and all that stuff. they didn't call the police. they told me i would get a letter in the mail, and a civil suit. i have no idea what that is. whats going to happen? am i going to have a criminal record? do i have to go to court? if i just pay them back, will that be enough? help me. i'm an idiot. i'm an honors student. i have money, i'm not poor. i'm just rediculously stupid. i wanted to see what it felt like, and now i just messed up my life.
i haven't told my parents either... i've never done anything like this in my life... i have no idea what made me do it... i mean, i have great friends, a good family environment, a 98.6% grade point average, i'm an honor student, president of 2 clubs at my school... i've never been interested in anything i'm not supposed to be intersted in (drugs, sex, alcohol)... oh god... i'm taking the psat's in like 2 weeks... and i can't get this out of my head... this morning, i couldn't sleep, so i made breakfast for my mom and my sister.. my mom was so happy, and she said thank you to me and everything... i mean, it's making me cry right now.. i mean, if it's just a fine i have to pay, i'll pay it myself... i have like $600 saved up from birthdays and stuff.. i just can't let them find out.. i regret this so much.. i'm so sorry..
Re: Shoplifiting at Kohls
i just realized... if i do have to pay them something, do they want the payment in a check? i can't do checks... would they accept a money order? oh god... i could smash my head in right now..
Re: Caught Shoplifiting at Kohls
If the police were not involved, they're speaking of a "civil demand" - a statutorily authorized amount they may attempt to recover from a shoplifter. And yes, they would accept payment by money order.
Re: Shoplifiting at Kohls
You should tell your parents today as they are responsible for you since you are a minor and they are oging to find out anyway. THis process is called civil recovery and by law, shoplifters caught redhanded may be held liable to the store owner for the retail cost, up to $1,500, of any item which is damaged or can't be recovered. The law also allows the retailer to assess light-fingered customers penalties up to $500. For the thief, paying the civil penalty avoids a criminal record. So you can expect to use all of your savings to cover your theft and possibly more.

Re: Shoplifiting at Kohls
does anyone know how much i should expect to pay? do they usually call your house? they took my phone number, but afterwards i realized that it's my old number... i moved like 2 weeks ago. when they send the letter, i can probably get it, since my family still gets alot of our mail there... i'm in that neigbohrhood pretty often.. is this going to go down in any of my records? will it in anyway affect me when i apply for college, med-school, a job, or a loan?
you guys really are a huge help to me. i feel like i can breathe again with your help... i don't feel so great about myself right now, and i know that i shouldn't either. i understand i did something horrible.. god...
Re: Shoplifiting at Kohls
You really have to tell your parents! Honesty is ONE of the most important things to learn early. You must face what you've done and the consequences that will arise from it. To hide this from them will only make it that much worse if they find out........
Re: Shoplifiting at Kohls
AND they will find out!
Intentionally giving your old telephone number and address to avoid your parents finding out, well you figure it out.
Tell your parents.

I agree with superdave.
I understand that you are embarrassed and ashamed. But you need some parental support to get through this. This is important first and foremost to you.
But it will also reflect your parents are going to be supportive in consequences related to this incident. You told us how responsible you have been until this incident. Something changed. You have moved. But family is still at your former residence. Did you separate from your family?
Re: Shoplifiting at Kohls
no one lives at our old house... the land people are looking for tennants... we moved becasue we bought a house, not family problems..
i'm about 95% sure i can do this without telling my parents... i told my 2 best friends, and i consider them closer than family, like extensions of myself... they said they'll help me, so i can make it withour family support...
can you guys just tell me if this will affect me when i apply for college, med-school, a job, etc.?
