Laid Off from Primary Job, Quit Secondary Part Time Job - Can I Get Unemployment
My question involves unemployment benefits for the state of: California

In July of 2012 I had two jobs, a full time primary job and a secondary part time job working 10 hours a week.
I found out in July that my full time job was ending on August 31st and I would be laid off.

I looked for a job in the local area and I could not find additional full time work and a relative offered to let me move in with them out of state and look there.

On July 23rd I asked my part time job if they could provide more hours and they were not able to, so I gave them two weeks notice and my last day was August 6.

After my last day of work at my Primary Full time job on August 31st, I applied online for CA EDD for unemployment - I filled out the necessary information that included my primary job history and any other jobs I had during an 18 month period, the form did not include a question of why I left my secondary job.

I was awarded benefits and began to receive payments in September 2012.

Yesterday, I received a letter in the mail from the EDD listed as a request for separation- the explanation on the letter said that they needed to know the reason why I stopped working for one of my former employers and information with instructions on explaining why and if I had quit my secondary job.

My question is, will I be disqualified from receiving unemployment benefits because I quit my secondary part time job several weeks prior to submitting a claim for my primary full time job that laid me off. Help, this is very distressing and I am afraid to be left without unemployment funds.

The crystal ball is out being recalibrated; the Magic 8 ball is broken, and Madame Zuileka is overdue back from her vacation. So looking into the future and determining what the EDD will decide is not a possibility.

I will say, though, KNOWING that your primary job was ending, WHAT WERE YOU THINKING to quit your secondary job even if they couldn't increase your hours? Even 10 hours a week is better than nothing, and would not have affected your UI benefits much, if at all. Quitting was a foolish, foolish move EVEN IF it ends up that you keep your UI benefits.

Perhaps because it wasn't possible to pay rent and utilities on 10 hours a week and a relative in another state offered the OP a place to live while looking for a job in the other state?...as indicated in the first post.

Or perhaps the poster should have investigated all the options, such as collecting UI while still working the 10 hours a week (yes, that's entirely possible) before making the decision to quit.

You might have trouble, but you can minimize the grief.

You're under no duty to volunteer that you knew you were going to be laid off from your primary job. However, depending on how things went when you asked for more hours at the secondary job be prepared that you might be asked "Did you know you were going to be laid off"?

From that court case, housing is a valid reason to do what you did. You left CA after you lost your job because you had access to housing with a relative.
