Medicaid Won't Cover All Kids
My husband and I were recently out of work. I am currently collecting unemployment and my husband just went back to work. We updated our information with the state and my oldest 2 children (different father) are still receivng medicaid however my youngest two children were cut off. When I spoke with my case worker he informed me that because my youngest two children's father is in the house they have to include all of our income for the youngest two, but only mine for the oldest two. This does not make sense to me. We have been married for 12 yrs the oldest children father does not pay support. In a sense they are counting my unemployment twice once for my oldest and then again for my youngest. Shouldn't they at least be using half my income for both scenarios? It is my husband's income that supports all of us.
Re: Medicaid Won't Cover All Kids
You need to review Medicaid rules for income calculation.
Re: Medicaid Won't Cover All Kids
Why doesn't it make sense to you that the state expects your husband to support his own children?
Re: Medicaid Won't Cover All Kids
My husband does support his children, my problem is that the state is not taking into account the fact that he is also supporting his two stepchildren. In other words, they are basically counting us as two families - myself and my oldest two children as one family - and then myself again, my husband, my youngest two children as another family, when in fact all of our income goes to support four children.
Re: Medicaid Won't Cover All Kids
You didn't give us your state, but you are right something is wrong. The way it's normally handled is all the household incomes (including child support if it were paid) go to counting the income and the total number of those living in the household are used to set the FPL threshold.
Re: Medicaid Won't Cover All Kids
In effect though, you are two family units. Your husband is not responsible for the welfare of your two eldest children, and their father is not responsible for the welfare of your two youngest.
Why you're not collecting child support for the eldest two, I dno't know.
Re: Medicaid Won't Cover All Kids
The government establishes these rules so that only the poorest people, that have children they cannot support, qualify. It is expected above that base income level, instead of having extra money for extras, you will pay for healthcare.
