Breaking Lease in NYC Due to Medical Reasons
My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: New York

I recently moved out to Brooklyn, NY with a friend. Her name is on the lease and we needed to get a cosigner, which we did. 4 months ago, my friend is diagnosed with cancer and has been hospitalized for the past 2 months, prognoses to death probably within a month. I cannot afford to pay by myself and want to break the lease.

Is there any provision in NY law to allow a tenant to legally break a lease due to a serious medical condition? And are there any repercussions to the cosigner and myself?

Even if there were a way for your roommate to claim that her illness should get her out of her lease, you're not sick.

You should find a new roommate, or see what you can negotiate with your landlord.
