Caught Stealing, Charged With Misdemeanor Petit Theft
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Florida.
Hi, I was recently charged with Petit Theft, in the form of a misdemeanor. The amount was between $100 and $110 dollars, and it was my first offense. The target was a major retail chain store, and I was not arrested on site, but instead given a date for the pre-trial hearing due to being cooperative and very polite (I assume). Should I contact a private attorney, or would the Public Defender suffice? I am short on funds, and reluctant to contact my parents for help with this matter. I am assuming that a diversion program would be the route to go. How would I do this? For a bit more background information, I am a 27 year old graduate school student at a major state school. Thank you in advance for your help!!!
Re: First Time Misdemeanor Petit Theft (Between 100 and 110 Dollars) in Florida
Public defenders are provided for those who are indigent and can not afford counsel. They're not some sort of default for people who are just unwilling to pay for their own.
Get a lawyer.

By the way...this incident may also cost you any financial aid or scholarships you are on....
