Visitation and Truancy

My question involves a child custody case from the State of: Texas

BC just started Kindergarden and the BF lives 260 miles away. BF does not want to come to visit during the standard weekends (1st, 3rd & 5) because he doesn't feel that 48 - 60 hours (Friday @ 3 PM - Monday @ 7 AM) is long enough for the amount of driving he will have to do. BF has been trying to convince me (more like harrassing me) to agree to letting the BC take for an extra day adjacent to school holiday weekends so child can go to BF house. So for a Monday Holiday, BF wants to keep BC until Tuesday and child will miss a day of school. I am not in agreement because the Truancy Laws in my county are really stiff. After 3 unexcused absenses, you go to court and pay fines. It isn't just the truancy laws that keep me from saying yes. I feel that an arrangement like this is very disruptive (to child & me) and I want our child to have good study habits and to realize that he has to follow all of the same rules as everyone else. (Somehow the father didn't learn this and in my opinion that has created serious problems).

When we agreed to our parenting plan we took into consideration that BF would not be able to see child as often and we agreed to increase the time in the summer from 6 weeks to at least 8 weeks. BF will also have child every spring break and I always give BF extra time during Thanskgiving and Christmas Holidays.

Am I being unreasonable for sticking to my guns on this issue?

I would toe the line. Child might miss naptime, recess, crayola hour and chocolate milk. All clearly more important than quality time with a parent.

I would absolutely not agree to my child missing a day of school every extended weekend. I would be shocked to hear of any judge who would order a child to miss school (at least, intentionally order that) to visit the other parent. Eight weeks in the summer is certainly reasonable, perhaps even generous of you to offer. Also reasonable would be sharing of spring break (many do every other year), Christmas break, Thanksgiving, etc.

If he doesn't want to drive that far for only three days, then he either works with you (or asks a judge) about other longer periods outside of the school schedule, or he lives with what he's got.

Truancy rules in our school district are really strict as well. And getting tougher. It's really hard these days to even get missed days excused. So I can definitely see where you are coming from. I'm sure the school would not be happy At All w/ that arrangement. And I agree w/ FWW - I'm guessing as well that a juidge would not be very happy w/ that idea as well.
