Shoplifting at a Grocery Store
My question involves criminal law for the state of: New Jersey
My daughter is 25 years old she went to the local shopRite to buy some parsley, after she got the parsley she went to the make line to look for a base, in her hand she had her wallet and a small pouch and also her cellphone, then she went to another line to look for something that I had asked for. As she was leaving a lady stop her and took her inside an office and ask her I she knw was she was there, my daughter that she didnt. The lady told her she saw her putting something in her pocket and then my daughter took everything out from her pocket and there was the base. My daughter never meant to steal that as she put her cellphone and her wallet inside her packet sh accidentally put the base. The lady gave her tow sheet of paper to sing and my daughter did after she explain everything but off course tha lady didn't believe her, I know my daughter and I know in my heart that she would never done that, my question is what is going to happen next? This is the first time.thank you

Who was it that said, "A good lie has details?" Your story has details, but none that are likely to convince a prosecutor that this was an accident. Pretty much everybody here has a cell phone. "I accidentally put unpurchased merchandise in my pocket along with my cell phone" isn't convincing, nor is talking about "my daughter" when... not too hard to figure out.
If you were criminally charged, it's off to court. You can consult a local lawyer about the possibility of deferral or a diversion program; at age 25 you should have known better.
You may receive a civil demand, asking you to pay a sum of money to compensate the store for its civil losses. The payment of that amount will not prevent prosecution or resolve your criminal case, but it will prevent further civil legal action against you.

The lady told her that she will be getting something in the mail and a fine, would this go further? And also told her that everything was going to internally.

If they send her fine and paying it, would this be over?
Re: Shoplifting at a Grocery Store
she will need to pay the fine.
After that it should be over.....but the store does have 1-2 years (depending on state) to press charges.
Re: Shoplifting at a Grocery Store
She lives in NJ, the product was worth about 15 and was taken by the lady
Re: Shoplifting at a Grocery Store
If they told you that all that would happen is that you will receive a civil demand, then it's reasonable to infer that they only plan to send you a civil demand.
