I Am Being Sued for Back Rent buy My Name Was Not on the Lease
My question involves small claims court in the state of: MARYLAND
My ex-friend is suing me for payment of the remainder of the lease. When she is the one who kicked me out. The lease is in her name. We argued back and forth about some seat covers she wanted me to buy. That I had decided not to because I had just got married and there were other expenses I needed to be. She went in a rage saying I was selfish, etc. When I was the one cleaning the whole house all the time... cleaning up behind her and her guests.... And at times she would come in my room and take what ever she needed... We would argue about random things once in a blue... Like for example... We lived in a two bedroom , two bath condo. When we first moved in she designated that the hallway bathroom across from my room would be my bathroom because she had a bathroom in her bedroom which was the master bedroom. Now quite often she would have friends over who would use my bathroom which i had no issue with. But one night her boyfriend used my shower left it a mess... with water all over the floor. I was still engaged at this time luckily my fiance had not come in that night to use the bathroom cause he would have been pissed when he saw the mens socks on my floor in the bathroom. When i confronted her about she said.. well technically thats the guests bathroom... So it shouldn't be a problem. I was livid but i got over. But basically she was all around selfish and dirty... Which I knew before we moved in.. Because she was my roommate in college, but i tolerated her then so i thought it would be okay and we were actually cool. I feel like the tension grew because I got married. The day we had the argument about the seat covers, i told her that she was rude and selfish and she went on to call me selfish and make up fake situations where i was selfish. She said DONT TOUCH MY SH***T ANYMORE BUY YOUR OWN SH***T . I SAID FINE NO WORRIES. SHE THEN CALLED ME GOING OFF ABOUT I HIDE THINGS FROM HER ALL UNTRUE... SO AT THIS POINT I GOT ANGRY I STARTED GOING OFF ABOUT HOW DIRTY AND SELFISH SHE WAS AND THAT SHE TREAT ME LIKE A MAID... SHE SAID WELL GET OUT... MOVE OUT TODAY IF I TREAT U SO BAD... I'LL EVEN GIVE YOU TONIGHT TO GET YOUR STUFF READY.... YOU CAN BE GONE TOMMOROW... SO I HUNG UP CALMED MYSELF DOWN. BUT I STILL STAYED.. BUT WE DIDN'T TALK AT ALL FOR A COUPLE DAYS... EXCEPT WHEN MY GRANDMA GOT SICK AND SHE TEXTED ME SAYING SHE WAS SORRY TO HEAR IT BUT SHE STILL WANTED TO TALK ABOUT THE ARGUMENT. ME AND MY FIANCE DISCUSSED AND HE KNEW ALL THE THINGS THAT HAD BEEN GOING ON BEFORE THE ARGUMENT AND SAID IT WAS BEST FOR ME TO LEAVE... PLUS BEFORE ALL THIS WHEN I FIRST GOT ENGAGED SHE APPROACHED ME AND SAID... WELL WHERE YOU GONNA LIVE AFTER YOU GET MARRIED AND I SAID I DON'T KNOW WE WILL FIGURE IT OUT. SHE SAID YOU AND HIM NEED TO TALK ABOUT IT. SO SHE NEVER WANTED ME THERE PERIOD. I TEXTED HER ON JUNE 8 SAYING I WAS MOVING OUT SUNDAY AND GOT UPSET SAYING IM SELFISH I CANT MOVE OUT AND INEED TO PAY THE RENT FOR THE REST OF THE LEASE. I HAD PAID JUNES RENT PLUS UTILITIES ALREADY SO I DIDN'T FEEL I NEED TO PAY MORE AND I TOL HER THAT... SHE SAID WELL I WILL SEE YOU IN COURT... SO SHE SUES ME FOR 7000 DOLLARS PLUS 8000 DOLLARS IN INTEREST. CAN SHE DO THIS? I MEAN EVEN IF SHE COULD THE RENT WAS ONLY 1076 538 A PERSON... THE LEASE IS UP IN NOVEMBER 7000 IS WAY MORE THAN THE REMAINDER OF THE LEASE. SOMEONE HELP ME OUR COURT DATE IS SEP 28

NO!!! I didn't lie. I have a lawsuit!!! State of MD issue... served by a sheriff.... i don't know anything about a limit for claims i chose a forum and posted my situation

Okay - my mistake! You have been served, in MD. You need to file a response requesting that the entire matter is dismissed with prejudice.
Do not ignore any court dates!

Okay so. On the court papers it says... It says that if i contest to the claim. To complete the notice of intention to defend and file with the court no later than 15 days after i have been served. That part i just noticed... It's well beyond that time. Can i still show up and defend myself? What does this really mean?

well more than 15 days... But i mean when the sheriff served me all he said was.. all this paper says is to show up at court on sept 28th... So i mean really.

When were you actually served? What is a) the date of filing and b) the date you were actually served?
