What Happens Next After You're Caught Stealing
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Virginia.
I am 16 and the other day made the most idiotic thing ever, I shoplifted from kohls. It was just me and my best friend. She had taken a few bras, underwear and a shirt. I had put a bra, some earrings and underwear in my purse also totaling a little above $100. I continued to buy a pair of jeans I actually wanted and just as we walked out the door, a few of the employees and I guess LP stopped us and asked us to come back in. They directed us to a tiny room in the back and there we emptied our purses. My friend tried compromising our situation but I just sat there silently shaking in fear. This lady called the police and we filled out paperwork with our info and agreeing not to enter my kohls again. When the police officer arrived, he simply copied down our info, our parents info, and the price total of the merchandise stolen. My parents were out of town so my best friends parents agreed to technically take me but then I was allowed to drive back home. I understand what I did was wrong and I feel tremendously guilty. I accepted my parents punishments and dont even feel comfortable in public anymore. I feel disguising and even made an appointment to talk with my pastor. I was stupid and nothing excuses my actions. I just am confused about what happens now. The police officer didn't hand me any papers or say anything about a court date. I dont understand why I'm being told to plead not guilty if I go to court, when it's obvious that I am. The officer had his notes scribbled on a tiny piece of paper and didn't seem very professional. Nothing was explained about what actions would follow. Please explain.

You will go to court. Plead Not Guilty, because often you may be given a Diversion Program or a lesser charge.

There will be court costs and fines. Costs for a lawyer or Public Defender. And the store will send a bill for Civil Demand. All in all, that $100 worth of merchandise will be costing your parents a few thousand dollars.
