Grand Larceny 4th Degree

My question involves criminal law for the state of: new york
someone has to turn themselves in tomorrow because they are being charged with grand larceny in the 4th degree.

last week they found something in a room in a doctors office where they work. they took it and gave it to a friend, thinking theyd get maybe like 200$ max for it. when he went to take care of it there was a description of it and he had to turn it over. so the property is now with the original owner.

this person paniced and emailed a friend asking her to call them (who is also a patient who saw the necklace in the room. & they didnt say anything about why. just asking to call. they figured shed be sympatheic bc shes pregnant and lost her job, and this person also pregnant with a one year old) they told her what had happened. she then went and told the doctor.
they were was fired. and now being charged.

they have no prior convictions and have never been in trouble before in their life. and the only "proof" they have is her word. thats its.
what should this person expect to come of all of this?
(and they already have a lawyer, but i would like other opinions)

They should expect their lawyer to make decisions in their best interest.

I would hafta say that the best "opinions" would come from they lawyer.

Ask the lawyer,the best thing she can do is to shut up and say nothing. Ask the lawyer what the chances are of getting the charges dismissed ,also then ask about an acd which would avoid a conviction or a reduction to disordely conduct which is a volation in new york. Giving that it's a felony charge it might be hard but it helps that it's their 1st offense. If things are looking dicey hopefully she can atleast get the felony reduced to a misdeamanor,if they are 18 I think they can get youthful offender status and get the conviction sealed. Basically ask the lawyer can the case be dismissed if not can they avoid a criminal conviction. They might be out of luck but the lawyer maybe be able to work something out. Say nothing with out a lawyer,maybe the lawyer can help her can processed quickly so she is not in the police station that long.
