Can Police Subpoena Credit Card Information
My question involves police conduct in the State of: New York
Hi fellas,
I've been having a debate with a friend of mine (who is actually headed to law school in the fall) regarding police investigations and credit cards.
You see in TV shows and movies police obtaining the suspect's credit/debit card information, and then using their recent charges (subway tickets, hotel rooms) to catch them.
Our question is: how much of this is actually legit, and how much of it is Hollywood?
If the police obtain your personal information through your credit card company / bank, are they required to notify you under privacy laws, or can police do it quietly?
Thanks for any thoughts!

Well, all I can say is I think the stuff in NCIS where they have the multi-million dollar lab with the see through displays that are touch sensitive and obviously have the fastest computer system in the world hooked up to them. Along with that, that near instantaneous DNA lab is something every cop shop should have.;) Doesn't every cop shop have stuff like that?

It requires permission or a subpoena to acquire most of the personal records they utilize.
There is a lot of artistic license in the cop drama shows.
