Registering a Foreign Divorce in the U.S.A.
My question involves a marriage in the state of: Missouri

He is Australian. I am a US citizen residing in Missouri.

We married in Las Vegas while he was on a visitor's visa.

We lived in Missouri until he returned to Australia before the visitor's visa expired and he thus had no immigration status (never filed).

Divorce was amicably agreed upon, filed and finalized in Australia. I have notarized copies.

How do I go about entering this into the record in Missouri?

    Many thanks.

Because I am still legally considered "married" in the US, and I'm not. I was told the divorce needs to be 'registered' in the US, in the state of my residence. Misinformation?

It doesn't really matter - it won't affect you in any real way because you have your divorce papers as proof of the divorce..yes?

It affects my tax status, does it not? I'm still filing as married with a hostile spouse (he refused to get a SSN for taxes).

In any event, I would like to register the divorce in the US. I understand I must do this in my state of residence. I again ask: how do I do this?

No, it does not affect your tax status at all. You are no longer married - hence you file single.

There is no centralized process for the simple registration of a divorce decree; it only really matters if there is a judgment that you need to have domesticated. Given that's not the case, there's really no need to do anything.

Thank you both, a million times. I really don't have the money to register this, yet was led to believe it was necessary (even when I called the local Domestic Docketing office).

You guys saved me $300. Eternally grateful. On to restoration of maiden name!

    Cheers!

As long as you have proof of your divorce, you're golden :)

All you need to do now is change your name which should be a piece of cake!

You have no idea what a huge weight you've lifted. Thanks again!
