Hours Cut Back for Personal Bias
My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: California
My hours are being cut back because I am no longer able to help my boss out on his property (off-books construction). Since I am moving to a new house that requires my time for construction and remodeling, he is upset that I no longer have time for him on weekends. This is a normal 40 hour M-F job. Is there any legal repurcussion we can pursue? Can I at least get unemployment compensation for the lost hours?
He is also personally insulting my wife (off topic a bit, but tells a little of what he's like) by saying she needs to quit school and get a second job so I can remain working on his property. We have a four year old child she takes care of, as well as working and going to school full time. There seems to be nothing reasonable that gets through to this man.
Thanks for any help.

Re: Hours Cut Back for Personal Bias
You posted this as a question about discrimination. Sorry, but your boss not liking you doesn't qualify you for legal protections.
If the cut in your hours and resulting drop in wages is sufficient to support a claim for a partial unemployment benefit, you are free to file for unemployment.

were you paid for your work on his property? If so, you complaining may open a can or worms you don't want to open. If you failed to pay taxes on that income, there could be a reckoning in your future that is far more expensive than the reduced hours.
as with all at-will employment: if you are not happy where you are, find other employment

I wasn't sure which thread was the most fitting. Discrimination might be the wrong one. Should I try another?

no. While in the wrong topic, most posters review most all topics. You got an answer from Mr. K who is kind of the default answer guy when nobody else responds. He is closer to omniscience than most.
