H1B Stamping After a DUI Charge

I recently went to the london embassy for my H1B stamping. the consulate officer said he had good news and bad news, good news is he felt that i was very qualified for my visa but due to the fact i was arrested in march in Atlanta for a DUI Less Safe he would have to send me for a medical examination to check for no alcohol or drug abuse. I went for the medical and the doctor mentioned that they do not give out visas if you have a dui in the past year. I had never heard anything like this before and wanted to see if anyone had heard of this. I also wanted to see if anyone had had to go for a medical exam at London and how long they waited for a response. My medical exam should be fine as I am not a heavy drinker.
