Civil Demand Letter in Michigan
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Michigan
I received a civil demand letter from a Law firm representing JC Penny stating to pay 200 dollars. If I pay it will I have a criminal record or do I have to go to Court? Any information on this matter would be very helpful. Thanks
Re: Civil Demand Letter in Michigan
You have left out a lot of the details, but a Civil Demand has nothing to do with a criminal case. Paying it will not give you a criminal record. Were the police called? Were you charged?
Re: Civil Demand Letter in Michigan
I was not charged with anything the police came and just took my information. Im not sure if I pay the Civil Demand if they still can charge me
Re: Civil Demand Letter in Michigan
As I stated above, the Civil Demand has nothing to do with a criminal case. Yes, even if you pay the CD you can still be charged criminally.
Re: Civil Demand Letter in Michigan
If the police came, the store may be filing criminal charges.
The Civil Demand is basically a Civil case against you, to recoup the costs of detaining you, etc. Pay this asap, if you don't - the amount will go up, and they can sue you in Civil Court, as well.
