Chatting Online with Underage Girl
My question involves criminal law for the state of California. I am 21 years old and I have had a few sexually explicit online conversations with a girl that was 17. We waited until she was 18 to meet in person to avoid and trouble with the law. However she apparently kept the fact that she met me from her parents and they recently found out. They are threatening to press charges against me saying they have our chat logs to one another. My questions is whether or not I can get in trouble with the law for this, since I waited until she was 18 to see her.

In short? Don't hot chat with children.

I had a mistake and revised the question to read what it's meant to.
Re: Chatting Online with Underage Girl
The fact that she is now 18 is irrelevant to protecting you from any charge for acts that occurred when she was 17. If her parents bring the chats to the attention of police, you are not protected from criminal prosecution for any potential illegal conduct that occurred during those chats. If the chats themselves violate CA law, those facts will stand alone, regardless of whether you ever met later or not.

Her parents got the chat logs by taking her laptop and signing into her personal email against her will. Since I'm assuming that has to be against the law does that change anything for me? Since the logs were secured illegally?

How did they manage that exactly?

They took her laptop from her and simply went to the website of whatever email service she uses. Her laptop keeps her email signed in for convenience to her. They went through literally all of her emails and I'm assuming saved the chats logs when they found them.
Re: Chatting Online with Underage Girl
Don't talk to the parents, and don't talk to the girl. If the police come calling, consult an attorney.
CAN you be in trouble? Sure. WILL you be in trouble? Who knows?
And don't account them seizing their daughter's laptop protecting YOU in any way.
Re: Chatting Online with Underage Girl
Would California Penal Code section 631 apply? Section C specifies that no evidence obtained in violation of this section shall be admissible in any judicial, administrative, legislative, or other proceeding. So am I safe? On top of that, wouldn't the fact that her parents accessed her email make it impossible to prove the authenticity of the emails?

I'd challenge anybody to convince the court that monitoring my minor child's cyber activity is illegal.
