Walmart Product Swap
My question involves criminal law for the province of BC:
First, I know this is a forum for the states, but I think my question may be relevant to canada as well as the USA.
My friend recently bought a coffee machine from walmart, took it home, took the new machine out, and swapped it with his old one then proceeded to return it to get his money back.
He feels awful about it and has lost a lot of sleep over what he did.
To ease his mind I was wondering how far walmart will go to catch him. His face is probably all over cameras, he paid with cash, but prior to paying he used his debit card at an atm in the store to take cash out, thus leaving a digital fingerprint.
Will they review the camera's then access the atm transaction records to trace his name and address? Can they do this?
Or will they simply look at the receipt and call it a write off? The value of the machine was around $100
Please no moral bashing, the lad already feels bad enough. He is an adult and was not stopped by anyone. Thanks

Re: Walmart Swap
We are a US law site.
however, what your friend did is called Return Fraud, and could result in criminal charges.
He can expect that if WalMart loss prevention has time, and given the value of the merch....they will track him down, and file charges.
He should stay the heck out of any WalMart with an hour radius of that store....
I would advise him to
