Incomplete Speeding Ticket Issued by a Park Ranger
My question involves a traffic ticket from the state of: Washington

Hi guys and gals! I was driving on the river road right by my house today, which is inside a state park that I take every day. The posted speed limit is 25 mph, but it's a virtually straight road with no traffic. I was going 35 mph and a park ranger (truck, but with lights) passed me going the other way, turned around, and flagged me down. I had forgot my license at home, so he agreed to let me off for that and just took my name and checked my proof of insurance and registration. He walked back to his truck and came back 5 minutes later with this:

The ticket is practically empty, and includes no record of my license number or any information at all about the car I was driving. Even if I were to pay the ticket, I can't even read the number under penalty. This should be really easy to fight, right? What's the chance a park ranger even shows up at a hearing? Do they even keep radar guns in their trucks? I was definitely going 35, and he appeared to have just guessed on my speed.

    Thank you for the help!

the vehicle was not ticketed so in itself, the lack of a description does not defeat the ticket.

since you didn't have your license on you, would you not expect that information to be missing? He cannot make it up.

did you happen to notice the ticket said you were going 40 mph, not 35?

as to radar or whatever: did you notice that little box to the right of the speed and the posted limit? It is marked "SMD". That means "speed measuring device". That means radar, lidar, or whatever but he used some device to measure your speed. If you want to know what it was, you will probably have to defend the ticket and ask for that information in the discovery phase of the trial.

If you cannot read the penalty and want to pay the ticket, call the court clerk and ask them what you are supposed to pay.

But what connects the ticket to me? Since no ID was checked, anyone could have just said my name and got the ticket registered in my name, right? Can't I just claim that I never received the ticket, and that it was someone else?

Yeah, sure you can. IF YOU WANT TO GO TO JAIL FOR PERJURING YOURSELF. Seriously? Dude, you admitted to speeding. You have two options. Request discovery of the prosecutor and post the response here, or take your lumps.

Hehe, yeah, sorry, you're right. Don't want to make this worse then it already is. I'll protest the ticket and file a discovery motion and post the results of that here. I just, probably incorrectly, thought that the fact that the ticket was so blank might be a technicality out of this. Thank you to the both of you :)

Sorry guys, I can't seem to figure out how to properly fill out the discovery notice. My ticket doesn't have the district court or municipal court checked, which one is it?

all I see is, at the bottom of the picture, it states to respond to the court below. It states the Spokane County District Court along with an address. It states there are directions on the reverse of the ticket.

Oh ok, thanks! And I need to wait to get my court summons before submitting a discovery request, right?

Read the bottom of the ticket ... what does it say...last word before the stamp ... it says NOTICE

Its a notice, that's all. Read up and learn the difference between a notice, complaint, information, and indictment.

You'll see a notice is very very basic in its requirements. This ticket information meets the minimal standard for a notice.

You can start an investigation right now. Read the court rules concerning your traffic case...they are online.
