I Was Caught Shoplifting at Walmart, What Will Happen
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Texas
Before I start, please be kind. i've learned my lesson and am already sad and scared as is... Anyways,
I'm 18 years old and I was at walmart and I had a moment of weakness as I unpackaged a product and placed it in my pocket. I walked out there door and was stopped by a man and a woman who said, "We saw what you did." They showed me the packaging I had left in one of the aisles. They took me to this room with a bunch of equipment and told me to sit down. The woman was very nice/monotone, asked for my ID, and told me they're gonna check their system and if this was my first time then I'd be let off with a warning. It was my first time and she took down my name, address, and phone number. I asked her if I was gonna recieve a fine or a letter, and she told me that usually if the product was under 10 dollars then they won't, but from reading others post that may not be the case plus she wasn't a higher up so I'm not positive if she knows or not. I asked her if tax was included and she told me no. I asked b/c the product I stole was 9.98 O_O
After that she printed me a general letter and told me to call corporate to see what they will do. It read,
"To Whom it may concern,
the incident in which you were involved may have implications beyond criminal charges. In addition to any criminal penalties, walmart stores inc. is allowed by state statute to recover civil remedies as a result of this incident.
If applicable, the law office of palmer, reifler, & associates, P.A. will contact you on behalf of walmart stores, inc. you must respond promptly to all correspondences you receive from walmart stores inc or the law office of palmer, reifler, & associates, P.A.
Please allow 14 days etc etc etc.
Sincerely
asset protection recovery walmart stores inc"
Since my product was 9.98 and under 10 dollars I'm hoping that this will be a lesson from some higher power. The thing that worries me however is the " walmart stores inc. is allowed by state statute to recover civil remedies as a result of this incident." Because I cannot afford the 500 dollar fine (says other posts), and if my parents find out about this incident, then I'm screwed. I plan to call them in the next 3-14 days. Hopefully they will have gotten the information and tell me if they will have a fine or not.
I'm curious on a few things
1. What will most likely happen
2. Will they send a letter?
3. Will I be charged or fined with anything?
4. If I intercept the letter and don't pay what will happen? Like a follow up letter or will the police get involved, court, etc?
Any other information would be helpful if I have forgotten anything. I'm still scared and a bit shakey.
Re: I Was Caught Shoplifting at Walmart, What Will Happen
Honestly, if it's under $10 and you're under 18 I wouldn't worry about it. They may or may not send you a letter requesting you to pay the $10, if they do pay it promptly. You won't get any criminal charges, if you weren't arrested you are 99.99% off the hook regarding any criminal charges. Don't not pay or ignore the letter!
