First Degree Burglary

My question involves criminal law for the state of: 1st Degree Burglary

My step son was arrested last night and charged with 1st degree burglary. Not sure what to do. Him and a friend decided to break into a friends house and steal a few hundred dollars worth of stuff. While in the process the neighbor who was the homeowners mother tried to find out why someone was in the house. To make a long story short they got caught. He is 17 years old. When the police questioned him he admitted to the crime. The police said for cooperating it would help in reducing the charges. That has not happened. They are trying him as a adult. We were told we make to much for a public defender and hiring a lawyer is expensive and I Am not sure I can afford it. Any suggestions

What's with this "We" make to much much money? If this 17 year old is being tried as an adult, it should be how much "He" makes. I would try to discuss this with the adult court or the local Public Defender's office.

That is what I thought as well. The judge today said even though he is a minor he is being charged as a adult and since he lives with us it goes by our household income. We were over the amount for a public defender so I guess we have to find a lawyer by ourselves.
