Landlord Wants Us Gone Because He No Longer Wants to Deal with Us
My question involves landlord-tenant law in the State of: Illinois
So i moved in with 2 other roommates in an owner occupied building. Things between my 2 other roomies "dustin" and "jessica" have gone sour. They have been in several disagreements and jessica has slammed glass bottles around yelling and storming out of our apartment. She decided that on feb 29th that she was going to call the landlord and tell him that she was no longer gonna pay rent and that she planned on breaking the lease.
Me and dustin didn't know anything about this until we called the landlords wife and she told us. So the LL tells us on March 1 that we have a week to pay her portion of the rent or we'd have to leave. We all agree that we could come up with this money even though we are pissed that she planned on bailing on us.(At this time we try and hand the LL our part of the rent and tell him we'd have jess's portion by the date he gave us but he declines taking it, stating that he doesn't want the money in 3 parts, but one lump sum) We tell the LL that we want a new lease with jessica taken off of it because we dont want to be held responsible for all of the rent and she could decide in 3 months to move back in as if nothing happened. He agrees to that and goes upstairs to call jessica.
20 mins later our LL talks to dustin and says that we have 2 weeks and then we must leave. Apparently jessica cussed him out over the phone and now he doesn't want to be bothered with us anymore. We don't know what to do next or if we have any rights at this point. We are going to try tomorrow again to hand him all the rent money in hopes that he will just take it, but any help or advice would be greatly appreciated!
Re: Landlord Wants Us Gone Because He No Longer Wants to Deal with Us
If you have a lease with a fixed term, then you have a lease with that defined term. If you do not, you or your landlord can give proper notice to end the tenancy. If your landlord gives you proper notice and you do not move, he can evict you.
