    Shoplifting Charges in Missouri
My question involves criminal law for the state of: MO

I got caught stealing some beauty and health products at walmart. The undercover security at walmart stopped me at the door and asked if i had anything in my purse, I was honest and said yes. He took me to the backroom and filled out some paper work and since the items were over $25 the police were contacted. This is my first offense other than minor traffic tickets. I'm completely embarrassed and ashamed of what I did. He did not mention whether or not I was banned from walmart he just said i would get a bill in the mail. Does anyone know if I am banned from walmart now? and if so for how long, and if i pay the bill will they lift the ban or am I just paying a bill for no reason? also i am in college and almost done with my degree I was wanting to know if there is any way to get this off my record? thanks in advance for any advice you can give!

Pay the bill, or risk being sued in Civil Court (and having your credit rating ruined).

If they did not give you a Trespass/Ban notice, you should be able to shop at Walmart/Sams. I would call the store LP and ask first - if they did ban you, you could be arrested for Criminal Trespass if you enter ANY WalMart.

Since they called police, you can also expect a court date.

All in all...expect $2000 in fines, fees, Civil Demand....You may also want to retain a lawyer or ask for a public defender.

Will a public defender be able to get my charges dropped or lessened? Or am I better off paying for a lawyer?

There is no guarantee that either a public defender or a paid lawyer will be able to produce any given result.

But it may be a moot point. In most if not all jurisdictions, if you can afford to pay for your own lawyer you are not eligible for a public defender.

In Missouri the Civil Demand letter will be for $250.00.
