Charged with Class D Felony from Shoplifting from Wal-Mart
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Indiana

My boyfriend and me were offered 200.00 from who is supposed to be a "friend" to go steal 2 mp3 players one cost 289.00 the other was 89.00 and I took a baby outfit for my son. The amount was like 445.00 not over 500.00 though. We got busted and the cops were called and we went to jail. I got bonded out, this is my first offense I've never been in any trouble with the law before and I really regret what I did not just because I got caught because I knew better and I have a son to think about. I am so stressed out and worried about what is going to happen to me. I don't want to go back to jail and I don't have a job so I can't afford an attorney. What do you think will happen to me how much trouble am I in I am so embarrassed.

You are in alot of trouble. If you cannot afford an attorney, I suggest you plead not guilty and request a public defender. You will also receive a civil demand letter for alot of money, so you better start saving up. You are only embarrassed because you were caught. Being a thief was fine until then.

If you are truly indigent and can not afford counsel, ask for a public defender. This isn't some random kid stealing a candy bar, you're part of an organized criminal activity. Indiana has some of the stiffest shoplifting penalties in the country. You could get up to three years for this. You would be lucky to not get prison.
